You should be able to find this information in your owner's manual, but if you do not have one, then you can try the following: Homelink: Hold the button on the homelink system until it begins to blink. Then, while holding that button, hold the button on your garage door opener until the homeli nk button blinks faster. Next you will need to press and release the 'learn' button on the overhead garage door opener. Then, hold the button on the homelink you just programmed until the garage door closes.
( Caution: If you press and hold the 'learn' button it will erase all of the codes programmed into the overhead unit.). Here's what my 2001 Owner's Manual (see 'Related Questions') says. 1) Prepare for programming the HomeLink Universal Transceiver by erasing the three factory default codes by holding down the 2 outside buttons until the red light begins to flash after 20 seconds. Release both buttons.
2) Hold the end of your hand-held transmitter 2-5 inches away from the HomeLink Universal Transceiver surface (located on your visor) while keeping the red light in view. 3) Using both hands, simultaneously press and hold the hand-held transmitter button and the desire HomeLink button. Do not release these buttons until step 4 has been completed(!).
4) The red light on the visor will flash slowly and then rapidly. Release both buttons when the red light flashes rapidly. Repeat for the other buttons as needed. It's been 5 years since I had to program mine, but it's still working like a champ.:).
Garage door opener programming. First of all; no 'garage door opener' came in or on a 1998 Windstar. That said; you may have a 'garage door opener' in your Windstar that someone put there. This was probably done by the owner of the garage door opener that was installed in the garage where the Windstar is parked. To reprogram such an opener you need to see the instruction sheet that came with the opener. If this is not available, the manufacturers customer service department should be contacted. Actually it did!.
The above is incorrect, The 98 Windstar LX came with a garage door opener built into the driver's sun visor. I know because I have one!
However, I could not get it to work when I followed the instructions in the Owner's Manual, so it's merely a curiosity for now. If it's a Home Link like in a 2001. I've linked the instructions provided from the 2001 Owner's Manual in another FAQ to the right. See if they'll work for you. Not All Windstar 98 LX have it I have a Windstar 98 LX too, but I don't have a garage door opener.
But at roof center, just behind the convex mirror, I have a 3 buttons panel, which I beleived that was a remote control, but it was a coins holder:). I know for you it's a remote control. Try replacing the battery or something. Which door opener you have Normally, the instructions in your manual should be accurate. If it's not working, maybe your door opener is too new for the Windstar 98, and the frequencies are not compatibles. Which year/brand is your door opener? Purple or orange learn button?
I believe the 2006 uses the same Homelink garage door opener as my 2001. NHere are the steps for programming a single button: n. N- Make sure you have the garage door opener with you. N- Turn the key to ACC (no need to have the car running, but you need power) n. N- press and h old the 2 outside buttons for around 20 seconds (it may be a bit longer) until the center light begins to flash. That erases whatever was in the memory.
N- Now press and hold the garage door opener and the button you are looking to program. The light should blink slowly, and the blink faster after about 4-5 seconds. N- Release both buttons. N- Try the button you just programmed. If the door opens, you're done. NIf it doesn' open, you need to do 2 more steps to program the new code into the garage door opener itself. N- Leave the key in the car.
Go to the garage door motor in the garage. There will be a wire hanging down. That's the antenna. At the top of the wire (possibly behind the light bulb cover) will be a button marked 'learn' or something similar. N- Press that button. Now you have about 30 seconds. Go to the car and push the button you just programmed.
It should open the door. NTo add a second car, repeat these steps.
The garage opener can handle codes from multiple cars. To begin, press and hold the 2 outer HomeLink buttons (to clear the memory) until the indicator light blinks slowly (after 20 seconds). Release both buttons. Position the end of the hand-held transmitter 1-3 inches away from the HomeLink surface.
Using both hands, simultaneously press and hold bo th the HomeLink button you want to program and the hand-held transmitter button. DO NOT release the buttons until step 4 has been completed. Hold down both buttons until the indicator light on the HomeLink flashes, changing from a 'slow blink' to a 'rapidly flashing blink'. This could take up to 90 seconds. When the indicator light flashes rapidly, both buttons may be released.
The rapidly flashing light indicates successful programming. To activate the garage door or other programmed device, press and hold the programmed HomeLink button - releasing when the device begins to activate. If the indicator light on the HomeLink blinks rapidly for two seconds and then turns solid, HomeLink has picked up a 'rolling code' garage door opener signal. You will need to proceed with the next steps to train the HomeLink to complete the programming which may require a ladder and another person for convenience. Press and release the 'smart' or 'learn' program button located on the garage door opener's motor to activate the 'training mode'.
This button is usually located near the antenna wire that hangs down from the motor. If the wire originates from under a light lens, you will need to remove the lens to access the program button. On the back of the garage door opener near the knobs for up and down pressure, is a set of 3-position dip switches. The dip switches can be hard to see since there is a set of wires that hang down and may cover the switches. Set the dip switches on the garage door opener and inside your remote to m atch. Dip switches 8 and 9 in the remote must be set to the zero position.

Once the switches match the remote should be able to operate the door opener. If you have bought a universal remote, such as the Chamberlain Clicker, that has 2-position dip switches, you will have to set the dip switches on the 139.53100 to either the + or - (up or down) positions. You cannot use the zero position with a 2-position remote. Here's what I found on www.homelink.com which makes the technology for the garage door openers in Honda's. BTW, the instruction worked for my 2000 Accord: First time programming 1. For first time training, press and hold the two outer HomeLink buttons, releasing only when the HomeLink indicator light begins to flash after 20 seconds.(Do not perform this step when training the additional HomeLink buttons.) 2. Position the hand-held transmitter 1-3 inches away from the HomeLink surface (located on your overhead), keeping the HomeLink indicator light in view.
Using both hands, simultaneously press and hold both the desired HomeLink button and hand held transmitter button. DO NOT release until the HomeLink indicator light flashes slowly and then rapidly. When the indicator light flashes rapidly, both buttons may be released.(The rapid flashing indicates successful training.) Note: Some garage door openers may require you to replace step 3 with the 'cycling' procedure noted in the 'View Canadian Instructions' section.
Press and hold the trained HomeLink button and observe the indicator light. If the indicator light is solid/continuous, training is complete and your device should activate when the HomeLink button is pressed and released. If the indicator light blinks rapidly for 2 seconds and then turns a solid/continuous light, proceed with the following training instructions for a rolling code device. A second person may make the following steps quicker and easier. Please use a ladder or other device.
Do not stand on your vehicle to perform the next steps. At the garage door opener receiver (motorhead unit) in the garage, locate the 'learn' or 'smart' button (usually near where the hanging antenna wire is attached to the unit). If there is difficulty locating the training button, reference the garage door opener's manual or contact us. Press and release the 'learn' or 'smart' button (the name and color of the button may vary by manufacturer). NOTE: Once the button is pressed, there are 30 seconds in which to initiate the next step.
Return to the vehicle and firmly press and hold the trained HomeLink button for two seconds and release. Repeat the 'press/hold/release' sequence up to 3 times to complete the training process.
